The Joint Research Centre (JRC) is pleased to announce the release of the dashboard on Socioeconomic indicators for the Life Sciences sectors, now available on the Data-Modelling platform of resource economics - DataM.
This dashboard is a tool prepared to support the publication of the EU Life Sciences Strategy, and its aim is to provide an overview of the socioeconomic context, sectoral structure, and trends of Life Sciences sectors in the EU,
allowing users to explore and analyze the socioeconomic context and trends of these sectors in the EU.
The Life Sciences sectors encompass activities that rely on knowledge, application, and innovation in life sciences fields, including healthcare, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, medical devices, and agrifood technologies, among others.
According to JRC estimates, the Life Sciences sectors created 29 million jobs in 2022, accounting for 13.6% of total EU employment, and generated €1.5 trillion in value added, representing 9.4% of EU's GDP. Furthermore, these sectors
incurred €46.6 billion in business expenditure on R&D, corresponding to 19.4% of total business expenditure on R&D in the EU.
This dashboard is accompanied by a Science to Policy Brief titled The Life Sciences sectors in the EU: drivers of economic growth and innovation. This brief provides an overview of the socioeconomic relevance of Life Sciences sectors in
terms of employment, value added, and business expenditure on R&D in the EU.
