1. News & events
PANAP at the 6th African Union (AU) – European Union (EU) Agriculture Ministerial Conference
PANAP, with support from the StEPPFoS project successfully hosted a side event at the 6th AU–EU Agriculture Ministerial Conference titled “Supporting Science-to-Policy for Sustainable Agri-Food Systems Across Europe and Africa,” brought together the AU Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy and Sustainable Environment, H.E. Moses Vilakati, and the EU Commissioner for Agriculture and Food, H. E. Christophe Hansen.
A panel session discussed the role of science into policymaking in Africa and the potential for a closer AU–EU partnership. Among the panellists Abubacar Kyari, Nigerian Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, and Martin Heydon, Irish Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, and former Minister of Agriculture of Zambia, Dora Siliya. The event recognized the common challenges and objectives of the African and Europe food systems and supported the transition to more sustainable systems. Participants acknowledged the role of PANAP in fostering AU–EU scientific cooperation and called for its enlargement.
PANAP 2025 General Assembly
The 5th PANAP general assembly explored the timely theme: “The Role of PANAP within the New Agricultural Strategic Frameworks and Policies for Africa and Europe”
As African and European agri-food systems evolve under new policy directions, PANAP continues to position itself as a key platform for advancing evidence-based policy analysis, research collaboration, dialogue, and capacity building for sustainable agri-food systems.
PANAP at the 28th GTAP Conference
To encourage applied, policy-relevant research relating to African agri-food system issues using CGE modelling, PANAP supported the participation of two African researchers at the annual GTAP Conference and organized two sessions (Young African Researchers and Economic resilience and food security in Africa).
3rd DEMETRA Modelling Workshop
On 21-24 June 2025 PANAP organised a three-day capacity building training workshop for Economic Policy Modelling in Kigali, part of the StEPPFoS project activities to strengthen the capacity of African researchers to use DEMETRA. The workshop attracted 20 participants from 13 institutions based in 11 different countries. The participants included researchers with an interest to apply a national CGE model to analyse African agrifood systems, including early and established researchers working on African food systems and policies.
PANAP Mentorship Programme
In June 2025 the one-year mentorship programme in CGE modelling kicked-off in Kigali, Rwanda. The programme supports researchers in conducting CGE analysis using the DEMETRA model and preparing a peer-reviewed publication. The aim is to strengthen modelling capacities of PANAP members, supporting continuous application of the method and foster knowledge acquired in previous trainings. The four mentees, selected in a competitive process among 50 applications are.
- Mariam Amadou DIALLO (Senegal/Belgium). Tariffs and Tensions: What U.S. Trade Policy Shifts Could Mean for South Africa
- Mgeni Edward MSAFIRI (Tanzania). Irrigation as Climate Change Adaptation Strategy: A CGE Analysis for Tanzania
- Oluwasola OMOJU (Nigeria). Economy-wide, food security and poverty implications of proposed health fiscal policy in Nigeria
