Nutrition Policies, Food Security and Labour Productivity

22 January, 2026     Safari Park Hotel, Nairobi

Background

Kenya has made progress in improving nutrition outcomes over the past decade; however, malnutrition, both undernutrition and overnutrition, remains a pressing concern. Ten percent of children under five are underweight, while 3% are overweight. Diet quality challenges persist, including inadequate consumption of vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds and essential micronutrients such as iron and folic acid. Only 31% of children aged 6–23 months meet the minimum acceptable diet standards and limited access to safe drinking water further worsens nutrition outcomes.

Food insecurity is driven by climate shocks, particularly recurrent droughts and high domestic production costs due to rising input prices. To address these issues, the Government of Kenya has established key policies such as the National Food and Nutrition Security Policy (FNSP), Kenya Nutrition Action Plan (KNAP) and Kenya Agri-Nutrition Implementation Strategy (KANIS). Under the Malabo Declaration, Kenya is also committed to doubling access to biofortified seeds and foods by 2025.

Given this context, the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (EC JRC), in collaboration with KIPPRA, has developed an analytical framework capable of modelling the impacts of nutrition, food security, dietary quality and related policy interventions on economic and labour productivity indicators. This restitution workshop provides an opportunity to share the framework with national stakeholders, validate its methodological approaches and identify ways it can support policy decision-making.

Purpose of the Workshop

The workshop aims to present the new analytical framework developed by EC JRC and KIPPRA, demonstrate its application in the Kenyan context and engage stakeholders in refining the tool to better inform national policy processes related to nutrition, food systems and economic productivity.
